Spotlight Story: Keith’s Stroke Recovery

“Working together, the NHS and NeuroAbility helped Keith regain his independence.”

This year, we’d like to share Keith’s inspiring journey of recovery.

After suffering a heart attack and then a stroke, Keith spent time in intensive care at Leicester Royal Infirmary before moving to the stroke ward.
Physiotherapy in hospital was limited, and after discharge he and his wife Jenny were told community rehab could take up to 3–6 months to begin.

Determined to get started, they contacted NeuroAbility and began working with Taher.
Just two weeks later, the Community Integrated Neurology and Stroke Service (CINSS) also became involved, offering sessions alongside Keith’s private physio. Importantly, Taher and the CINSS team spoke directly with each other to make sure Keith’s rehab was joined-up and consistent.

This collaborative approach has made a real difference. Keith has progressed from needing a Rotunda transfer aid to walking with a quad stick, and he’s already achieving new goals like stepping up and down the doorstep.
Work is also ongoing to improve movement in his arm, with support from both CINSS and NeuroAbility.

Jenny shared with us: “Taher got Keith walking again. All the physio Keith has received has been good.”

Keith’s story shows what’s possible when the NHS and private physiotherapy work hand-in-hand — helping stroke survivors regain independence and look forward with hope

UPDATE: After collaboration between NHS and NeuroAbility Keith has managed to reach one of his personal goals, which was to climb the stairs confidently in his house. Keith achieved this!
