Matthew lives with a combination of conditions that many may never fully understand, including Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP), epilepsy, learning difficulties, Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT), and autism.

Not only does Matthew face these challenges, but his father also shares the same rare form of HSP – a condition with no cure.

Despite all of this, Matthew is incredibly proud of his journey and is always open to sharing his story.

​

Living with these conditions has affected Matthew’s mobility, leaving him as a wheelchair user with challenges like poor coordination, stiff legs, and issues with circulation, bladder, and bowel control. But Matthew doesn’t let that define him. He’s an inspiration to all who meet him, including our Clinical Director, Taher.

​

Taher has been visiting Matthew at home, where he lives with his parents, to guide him through a series of stretches to help improve his leg muscles. Taher also introduced Matthew to a wobble cushion, which helps him with better posture and balance, especially during activities like horse riding with Riding for Disability and sailing with Sailability. These activities bring Matthew immense joy and allow him to experience life in ways that many might think are out of reach for someone with his conditions.

Matthew said something during our chat that really touched us:

"I like Taher, he is kind, I feel like he cares about me. I like the new stretches he has shown me too!" 💙

Matthew’s story is a reminder that despite the challenges we face, there’s always strength in moving forward, no matter how tough the journey may be. His courage and determination are a testament to the power of care, kindness, and the support of his family.
