From Stroke to Strength: Gillian’s Journey to Independence
The Unexpected Stroke

In November 2024, Gillian went into hospital for what was expected to be a routine hernia operation. As part of the procedure, she was temporarily taken off her blood thinning medication. After returning home, she began to feel unwell. The very next day, after speaking with her daughter, Gillian collapsed. She had suffered a massive stroke.

She was rushed to hospital where she received a life-saving thrombectomy. In the immediate aftermath, Gillian was unable to swallow and had significant weakness in her legs and arm. Her left side was affected more.

A Challenging Start

During her 8-week hospital stay, Gillian began to swallow again, but could only lift her affected leg up in the bed, she was unable to stand. On January 3rd, 2025, she was discharged, but continued to experience severe weakness in her arm and relied on a wheelchair.

Once home, she adapted by using a stairlift, which allowed her to access all areas of her house and regain some independence. Eventually she progressed to using a Rotunda to move from sit to stand and other transfers and also started using a Zimmer frame. She was provided a six-week package of community physiotherapy, but as it came to an end, Gillian knew she needed more support to continue progressing.

Finding NeuroAbility

Gillian searched for specialist neurological physiotherapy and that’s when she discovered NeuroAbility. She began working with Taher, one of our experienced neuro physiotherapists.

"Taher is reassuring and gives me confidence. I don't think I would be where I am today without his help."

With twice-weekly sessions and a personalised recovery plan, Gillian quickly began to make improvements.

Building Strength and Confidence

Since starting her therapy with NeuroAbility, Gillian has made remarkable strides:

  • ✅ She is now walking without a stick

  • ✅ She can go up and down stairs unaided

  • ✅ She continues to work on her arm using SaeboStim to help re-activate the muscles

Although her arm recovery is ongoing, Gillian’s determination, paired with expert therapy, has led to outstanding progress.

Gillian’s Advice for Others Recovering from Stroke

“Take your time. You may be impatient to get back to your old self, but you have to pace yourself.”

“Accept all the help you can get. Don’t try and do it all alone”

Get a good physio. That makes all the difference.”
